Church History

Previous to the organization of Prospect Baptist Church with Rev. B.H. Carter leading, meetings were held in a log school building near the present church building site.  From these meetings came the desire for a church.

The Church was organized in 1866.  Ministers B.H. Carter, Davis Williams and Cauley were present.  Rev. B.H. Carter was Moderator presiding over the conference.
B.H. Carter, Priscilla Clayton, Nancy Ann Clayton, Clementine Clayton, Francis Creps, Berry Mann, Bill Mann and Jim Hall were some of the first members.
Brother B. H. Carter was elected first pastor and served until 1895, with the exception of a few months by B. H. Harget and two years by J. F. Hodge.  Rev. H. Morris was then called to the church and served until 1901.
The Church was a member of the Rocky River Association as early as 1872.  The Church was received into the Stanly Baptist Association in 1894.
Around 1900, a one-room frame structure was built.  An addition was made to this building in 1910 and dedicated the same year.  In 1937, another remodeling job was completed with Sunday School rooms added.
In 1947, the first church structure was destroyed by fire.  Just previous to this, Rev. W. B. Holmes resigned his pastorship.  This left the Church membership without a pastor or building, but not without the Spirit of Christ.  Rev. Lee Hartsell was called as pastor; and with all members cooperating and help from sister churches of the association, the present building was erected at the approximate cost of $45,000.00 the same year.  On August 15, 1948, this building was dedicated.  In 1950, a nine-room parsonage was built at the approximate cost of $18,000.00.  Dedication services for the parsonage and the organ were held June 15, 1952.  In 1954, the Educational Building was erected; and in 1967, an addition to the Educational Building was erected at the approximate cost of $60,000.00.  On December 23, 2007, the church agreed to start construction of a new Family Life Center.
The Church has reported a Sunday School since 1895.  The Church membership was 64 in 1871.  The present Church membership is 868 as of January 25th, 2010.
